Sausage Alfredo, the perfect combo of Italian sausage, peppers and onions, pasta, and Homemade Alfredo Sauce. A quick and easy dinner recipe that is quite tasty I must say.
Although you could use any kind of sausage you’d like in this recipe, I really love Italian sausage. I’m guessing most people have had or know about Italian sausage but just in case you do not…
What is Italian Sausage
Italian sausage is typically pork sausage mixed with seasonings including fennel. You may a wide range of varieties but can typically be sweet, mild, or hot. Sweet sausage generally has more basil, and the hot generally has more red pepper flakes.
Only 8 easy ingredients in this pasta dish. Feel free to substitute your favorite sausage (andouille sausage, chicken sausage, turkey sausage, smoked sausage, etc.) and veggies.
Sausage Alfredo Ingredients
- Pasta
- Onion
- Bell pepper
- Italian sausage
- Butter
- Garlic
- Heavy cream
- Parmesan cheese, good quality freshly grated
How to Make Sausage Alfredo
- MAKE PASTA. Bring a large pot of water to boil and cook pasta according to box directions for al dente.
- COOK SAUSAGE & VEGGIES. Meanwhile, cook onion, pepper, and sausage in a large nonstick skillet (or skillet sprayed with nonstick spray or a little olive oil) over medium heat for about 3-5 minutes or until vegetables are soft and sausage is browned and cooked through. Break up the sausage as it cooks. Set aside.
- MAKE ALFREDO SAUCE. Place a large pot over medium heat. Melt butter, then stir in minced garlic cloves. Cook about 1 minute or until garlic is soft and fragrant, stirring constantly.
- Slowly add the heavy cream to the saucepan, whisk until cream comes to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer about 3-5 minutes or until it starts to thicken.
- COMBINE. Stir in Parmesan cheese until smooth and thick. Stir in onions, peppers, sausage, and drained cooked pasta.

Serving Suggestions
- Before serving, I’d suggest topping the pasta with a little fresh chopped parsley and/or freshly grated parmesan cheese.
- For best results, serve right away. Alfredo sauce generally tastes best right away, and not when reheated.
- You can serve this past all by itself or it would also be great with a salad and/or homemade bread like these easy and delicious Fluffy Buttermilk Chive Biscuits or this simple Beer Bread.
- A side vegetable is also an option with this pasta such as steamed broccoli or even these easy Italian Green Beans or Roasted Brussels Sprouts.
Quick Tips for Best Results
- I would recommend serving this pasta dish right away. You can reheat leftovers, but they most likely will not be as good.
- Use any kind of pasta you’d like, but make sure you adjust the pasta cooking time as needed.
- Be sure the sausage, peppers, and onions are thoroughly cooked before mixing with the pasta.
- If you like a lot of pasta and/or sauce, you might want to double either or both in the recipe. Some people may find the serving size a bit on the small side. Likewise, if you prefer A LOT of sauce, you may want to double the sauce recipe. Personal preference.
Sausage Alfredo FAQ
How should I store the Sausage Alfredo pasta?
Alfredo sauce is generally best served right away, however, if you need to store leftovers, cover and refrigerate.
Can I freeze the Sausage Alfredo?
Alfredo sauce generally does not defrost and reheat great, so I would not recommend freezing.
How long will the Sausage Alfredo last?
Well covered, it will last at least a few days in the fridge.
Substitutions?
Instead of Italian sausage, you could use your favorite sausage (chicken, turkey, andouille, smoked, etc.) or meat (bacon would be great). Instead of peppers and onions, you could use your favorite vegetables (spinach, broccoli, mushrooms, tomatoes, etc.). You can also use your favorite type of pasta (fettuccine, tortellini, spaghetti, etc.). You may need to adjust the cooking time depending on any substitutes.
Can I use low-fat ingredients?
You can use low-fat sausage, but I would not recommend using low-fat cheese or cream/milk. Low-fat ingredients in the Alfredo sauce may not result in a thick creamy sauce.
What else can I add to this recipe?
You can add your favorite meats (such as shrimp, bacon, etc.) as well as vegetables (spinach, broccoli, mushrooms, etc.). You can also add your favorite seasonings such as basil, oregano, Italian seasoning, or even a spicy Cajun seasoning.
What should I serve the pasta with?
See above for more serving suggestions, but I’d suggest just a simple salad.
Didn’t turn out, what went wrong?
Make sure you used good quality Parmesan cheese and full-fat ingredients in the sauce for best results.
Can I make this vegan, vegetarian, low carb, or gluten-free?
Vegan – You can try vegan dairy and cheese in this but results could vary quite a bit. Also, omit the sausage and use a vegan substitute if you’d like.
Vegetarian – Omit the sausage.
Low-Carb – Swap out the pasta for a lower carb pasta, zoodles, or spaghetti squash.
Gluten-Free – Swap out the pasta for gluten-free pasta, zoodles, or spaghetti squash.
