Boom Sauce Recipe, an easy burger and fry sauce recipe that is great on other things like sandwiches, chicken, salads, and even fish! My family also calls this addictive sauce our “secret sauce” because we use it as a dipping sauce for just about everything!
This Boom Sauce, aka “secret sauce” (or we sometimes call it boom boom sauce) is so easy to make! We always keep a big bottle of it in our fridge and put it on almost everything. Makes the best dipping sauce for so many things! Be careful though, it’s quite addictive!
This Boom Sauce (or boom boom sauce or “secret” sauce) is not only the best burger and fry sauce, it’s great for just about everything! Well except maybe ice cream. Although if you do want to put it on ice cream, who am I to judge?! haha!
What is Boom Sauce
This Boom Sauce is our family’s “secret” sauce (or house sauce) like a comeback sauce or dipping sauce or spread for burgers, fries, onion rings, sandwiches, and more. Also great for fish, shrimp, seafood, tacos, beef or steak, or even chicken or chicken wings.
This boom sauce would be a great burger sauce recipe for some of my burger recipes like my French Onion Burger and Philly Cheesesteak Burger. Or homemade onion rings would also be great with this Boom Sauce.
This simple gourmet sauce is quick and easy and can easily be adapted to your personal preference. It’s really the best condiment to have around for every occasion.
Equipment You May Need
- Mixing Bowl – Just need one cute mixing bowl for this simple recipe. Although I do like to make a big batch so you might want a large mixing bowl.
- Whisk – A sturdy whisk will help mix all the ingredients.
- Squirt Bottle – Great for storing in the fridge, a squirt bottle will turn this boom sauce into your own condiment.
- Mason Jars – Small (or large) mason jars are also a great way to store the secret sauce in your fridge. Or you can also store in an empty ketchup or mayonnaise container.
(Full printable recipe card is at bottom of post.)
Boom Sauce Ingredients
- Mayonnaise – You can use regular, light, or low-fat. Just use your favorite.
- Ketchup – Regular or low sodium will work.
- Mustard – I use regular yellow mustard but you could also use Dijon mustard or a combination of both.
- Onion Powder – Regular onion powder or even minced onion would be a good option.
- Garlic Powder – We like to use garlic powder, but you could also use minced fresh garlic.
- Paprika – Smoked or sweet paprika would be fine.
- Worcestershire Sauce – Adds a little tang to the sauce!
How to Make Boom Sauce
Step One: Whisk all the ingredients in a mixing bowl.
Step Two: Cover and refrigerate. That’s it!
(Full printable recipe card with full details is at bottom of post.)
Uses for Boom Sauce
- Great sauce or spread for burgers, hot dogs, or even sandwiches.
- Simple dip for potato chips, French fries, onion rings, tater tots, or even fried pickles.
- Delicious on fish or seafood such as shrimp or crab, beef or steak, pork, or even chicken or chicken wings.
- Mix a little into your favorite creamy salad dressings or dips.
Quick Tips for Best Results
- Make sure you use condiments you like. If you don’t like the mayo, ketchup, or mustard you use, chances are you’re not going to like this secret sauce.
- Refrigerate overnight before using if you can, but it’s still delicious if eaten right away.
- Depending on the brands of condiments you use, your sauce may be a little thick. To think it out a little you can whisk in a little water, pickle juice, lemon juice, or even vinegar.
Feel free to change it up a little to resemble some of your favorite restaurant dipping sauces like Outback’s Bloomin’ Onion sauce (or blooming onions), Mississippi comeback sauce, and various copycat burger joints burger sauces.
Like I mentioned above, you can easily adjust this “secret” sauce to your personal preference. Here are some ideas of my own and some from Snappy Gourmet readers (just add a little of any of these for a whole new sauce!)…
Secret Sauce Variation Ideas
- Horseradish – Great for serving with fish or seafood like shrimp or crab. Drizzled over homemade crab cakes would be delicious.
- Pickles, Relish, or Pickle Juice – For pickle lovers! You can even use homemade pickles like these Spicy Pickles or Overnight Dill Pickles.
- Hot Sauce – Tabasco, Frank’s, sriracha, or your favorite hot sauce for a spicy version.
- Beer – A dash of beer would be a great flavor to try.
- Other Seasonings – Cajun, Caribbean, Old Bay, or your other favorite seasoning blends are fun to try.
- Other Tomato-Based Sauces – Chili sauce or your favorite BBQ sauce would be a great addition for something a little different. This homemade chili sauce looks like it would be a good addition.
- Liquid Smoke – Perfect for a smokey BBQ flavor.
- Vinegar or Lemon Juice – If you like things a little more acidic.
- Onions or Garlic – I like to use onion powder and garlic powder but you could use fresh minced onion or garlic instead.
- Sugar – For a sweet hamburger sauce version you can add a little sugar or sugar substitute.

I made this as a sauce for onion rings. Added some extra hot sauce, chili powder, and used Dijon mustard. I also used ranch instead of mayo and it was great
Lisa Huff says
Happy to hear it turned out well with all the substitutions!

WHERE are the quantities for each ingredient. I could guess but it might taste awful. My time and money would be wasted. It would really be nice to know the measurements. Thank you.
p.s. If they are already listed here, I apologize for asking, but I don’t see them.

OMG! This sauce is absolutely amazing. I’ve made sauce similar to this for my burgers, but not nearly the same. My homemade burger was gone in a flash of light. Best burger I’ve had in a long time. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much Ryan!

Your quote,”…it’s great for just about everything “ spurred me on to try it. I was given quite a few veggie burgers (frozen)…and, let me just tell you, homemade beats convenience by a mile!! But,not wanting to go to the grocery store, I cooked them and topped them with your sauce. I am convinced your sauce is the only thing that made them good!! Thank you for the recipe. The only change I made was to use Siracha hot sauce instead of the Worcestershire sauce because I like spicy and because I didn’t have the Worcestershire sauce. I’m going to keep your sauce (and the recipe) for when I make other things. Thank you.
Lisa Huff says
Ha! Happy to hear the sauce saved the veggie burgers! :)
Kate Stevens says
Another amazing addition is liquid smoke, about 1tsp….so good!

My family loved this recipe! I added horseradish mustard instead of yellow! Really good!
Lisa Huff says
Thanks! :) Horseradish mustard is a great addition, yum!
Patricia says
How long can you keep this sauce after you make it.
Lisa Huff says
It should be ok for weeks if not months unless you make a lot of additions/substitutions or have really old ingredients. :)
Annette says
Love this recipe. I altered mine a bit by adding old bay and a dash of crystal but this was a huge hit in my home! Thank you!!
Lisa Huff says
Thank you for the comment! :) Those are great ideas too! We also like to add Cajun seasoning and horseradish which you might like.
