Fall is here, and this Autumn Spinach Salad is basically the season in a bowl! I’ve been making this spinach salad and homemade vinaigrette for years, and it’s still one of my favorite ways to turn simple fresh ingredients into something that feels a little special.

The combination is SO good. You get tender baby spinach, sweet fresh pear, crunchy toasted pecans, tangy blue cheese, and thin slices of red onion all tossed with an easy sweetened Dijon vinaigrette. Sweet, savory, crunchy, creamy, tangy. It’s all happening!

This easy spinach salad is also incredibly versatile. Serve it as a simple fall side dish for a weeknight dinner, add chicken to turn it into a heartier main dish, or put it on your Thanksgiving or Christmas menu. And because there’s no cooking involved, aside from toasting the pecans if needed, you can have the entire salad ready in about 15 minutes.

You can also have a little fun with the ingredients. Swap the pecans for walnuts or almonds, try feta or goat cheese instead of blue cheese, or add seasonal fruit such as apple, dried cranberry, orange, or pomegranate. Lots of possibilities!

What I Love About This Recipe

  • This Autumn Spinach Salad has a little bit of everything. The pear brings sweetness, toasted pecans add crunch, blue cheese adds a creamy and tangy bite, and red onion gives the salad some zip. The fresh baby spinach keeps everything light and lets all those fall flavors shine. Every forkful is a little different, which keeps this simple spinach salad interesting.
  • It takes just 15 minutes to make. There are no complicated cooking techniques or hard-to-find ingredients involved. Toss the salad ingredients together, whisk the homemade vinaigrette, and you’re basically done. That’s my kind of easy fall side dish!
  • It’s an especially good salad for Thanksgiving and other fall holidays. The pear, pecans, and tangy Dijon mustard vinaigrette fit right in with cozy autumn flavors without adding another heavy dish to the table. You can serve it alongside turkey, chicken, pork, beef, or your favorite holiday dishes. It’s also colorful enough for a special occasion.
  • This fall spinach salad is easy to customize. Try walnuts instead of pecans, feta or goat cheese instead of blue cheese, or add apple, cranberry, pomegranate, or another favorite fall fruit. You can even add precooked chicken for a heartier main dish. The basic spinach salad recipe gives you plenty of room to make it your own.
  • The homemade vinaigrette couldn’t be much easier. Cider vinegar, sugar, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, and olive oil turn into a sweet and tangy dressing in just a few minutes. You can even make the vinaigrette ahead and refrigerate it for about 3-5 days. One less thing to do right before dinner!

Equipment You May Need

  • Large Serving Bowl – Use a bowl with plenty of room so you can toss the baby spinach and toppings without sending pecans flying across the kitchen.
  • Small Mixing Bowl – Perfect for whisking together the homemade Dijon vinaigrette.
  • Whisk – Helps combine the cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, seasonings, and olive oil into the dressing.
  • Sharp Knife – You’ll need one for coring and thinly slicing the pears and red onion.
  • Cutting Board – Gives you a sturdy surface for preparing the fresh fruit and onion.
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons – Helpful for getting the vinaigrette proportions just right.
  • Salad Tongs – Make it easy to gently toss and serve the finished spinach salad.

For the Spinach Salad

  • Fresh Baby Spinach Leaves – You’ll need about 12 ounces, or approximately 12 cups. Wash and thoroughly dry the spinach before assembling the salad so excess water doesn’t dilute the vinaigrette.
  • Ripe Pears – Fresh pears add natural sweetness and juicy fall flavor. Core and thinly slice two ripe pears just before assembling the salad.
  • Pecan Halves – Toasted pecans bring a delicious nutty crunch that works especially well with pear and blue cheese.
  • Crumbled Blue Cheese – Adds creamy texture and bold, tangy flavor that balances the sweet fruit and vinaigrette.
  • Red Onion – Thinly sliced red onion adds color, crunch, and a sharp savory bite. A little goes a long way!

For the Dijon Vinaigrette

  • Cider Vinegar – Gives the homemade vinaigrette its bright, tangy base and pairs nicely with the fall fruit.
  • Granulated Sugar – Sweetens the dressing and balances the acidity of the cider vinegar and mustard.
  • Dijon Mustard – Adds tang and depth while helping bring the vinaigrette ingredients together.
  • Salt – Enhances all the flavors in the dressing and salad.
  • Pepper – Adds a little savory seasoning.
  • Olive Oil – Forms the rich, smooth base of the homemade vinaigrette.

How to Make Autumn Spinach Salad

Step One: Assemble the Spinach Salad
In a large serving bowl, toss together the fresh baby spinach, pear slices, toasted pecan halves, crumbled blue cheese, and thinly sliced red onion until well combined.

Step Two: Make the Dijon Vinaigrette
In a separate small mixing bowl, whisk together the cider vinegar, sugar, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Gradually whisk in the olive oil until well combined.

Step Three: Dress and Serve the Salad
Pour your desired amount of dressing over the Autumn Spinach Salad and toss to combine. Serve immediately with any remaining Dijon vinaigrette on the side.

Can I Make Autumn Spinach Salad Ahead?

Parts of it, yes. For the freshest salad, I wouldn’t toss everything together with the vinaigrette hours ahead of time.

Instead, prep the components separately. You can make the Dijon vinaigrette ahead, toast the pecans, wash and dry the baby spinach, and slice the red onion in advance.

I’d wait to slice the pears until closer to serving because cut pears can brown. Then assemble and dress the salad shortly before you’re ready to eat.

This approach is especially useful when you’re making the salad for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or a dinner party and already have plenty of other things going on in the kitchen.

Autumn Spinach Salad Variations

One of the best things about a fresh spinach salad is how easy it is to change. Make as written or use the recipe as a starting point for your own favorite fall salad.

  • Instead of pear, you could try apple, dried cranberries, mandarin orange, or pomegranate arils.
  • Instead of blue cheese, you could try feta cheese or goat cheese.
  • Instead of pecans, you could try walnuts, almonds, or your favorite nut.
  • For a heartier version, you could try adding precooked chicken or crispy bacon.
  • You can swap out the baby spinach for regular spinach, your favorite lettuce, or add a little chopped fresh kale.

Other Dressing Ideas

The homemade cider vinegar and Dijon vinaigrette is the dressing is my first choice. That said, there are lots of flavors that work well with spinach, pear, apple, cheese, and nuts.

  • A balsamic vinaigrette would give the salad a deeper sweet-tart flavor.
  • A honey Dijon vinaigrette could replace some or all of the sweetness with honey.
  • A maple Dijon dressing would lean even further into those fall flavors.
  • Fresh lemon or orange can also work nicely in homemade vinaigrettes for spinach salads.
  • And if you’re looking for something completely different, a sweet poppy seed dressing is another dressing commonly paired with fruit and fresh greens.

Just remember that changing the dressing will change the overall flavor of the Autumn Spinach Salad as written.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve this Autumn Spinach Salad as a side dish with roasted chicken, turkey, pork, beef, or your favorite fall dinner.
  • It’s especially good for Thanksgiving or Christmas because the fresh greens balance richer holiday foods.
  • For a light lunch or dinner, add precooked chicken and serve the salad as the main dish.
  • You can also pair the salad with soup and crusty bread for an easy fall meal.
  • If you’re serving a crowd, keep the extra Dijon vinaigrette on the side so everyone can add as much dressing as they’d like.

Quick Tips for Best Results

  • Use fresh baby spinach. Look for crisp, bright green leaves and remove any wilted pieces.
  • Dry the spinach well. Excess water can dilute the vinaigrette and keep it from coating the leaves.
  • Choose ripe pears. They should be sweet and juicy but still firm enough to slice.
  • Slice the pears close to serving time. This helps keep them looking fresh.
  • Toast the pecans. Toasted nuts add more flavor and a great crunchy texture.
  • Slice the red onion thinly. Thin slices distribute that strong onion flavor more evenly throughout the salad.
  • Make the dressing ahead. The Dijon vinaigrette can be refrigerated in a covered container for about 3-5 days.
  • Dress just before serving. Adding vinaigrette too early can make fresh spinach wilt.
  • Start with less dressing. Toss, taste, and add more if needed. You can always serve extra vinaigrette on the side.
  • Customize it. Walnuts, feta, goat cheese, apple, cranberry, pomegranate, chicken, or bacon are all possibilities if you want to change things up.

Autumn Spinach Salad FAQ

How should I store Autumn Spinach Salad?
For best results, store the salad components and Dijon vinaigrette separately in covered containers in the refrigerator. Once fresh spinach has been tossed with dressing, it will start to wilt, so this salad is best assembled close to serving time.

Can you freeze Autumn Spinach Salad?
No, I wouldn’t recommend freezing this salad. Fresh baby spinach, pear, cheese, and the other ingredients won’t maintain their best texture after freezing and thawing.

How long will the Autumn Spinach Salad last?
The assembled salad is best enjoyed fresh. The homemade vinaigrette can be made ahead and stored in a covered container in the refrigerator for about 3-5 days.

Substitutions?
You can use walnuts or almonds instead of pecans. You could also experiment with feta or goat cheese instead of blue cheese, apple instead of pear, or add seasonal ingredients such as dried cranberries or pomegranate arils.

Can I use low-fat ingredients?
You could experiment with a lower-fat cheese if desired. Keep in mind that substitutions can change the flavor and texture of the finished salad and vinaigrette.

What else can I add to this recipe?
There are lots of possibilities! Try precooked chicken, crispy bacon, fresh apple, dried cranberries, pomegranate, mandarin orange, walnuts, almonds, feta, or goat cheese. Just don’t add everything at once, or those beautiful pears and spinach may get lost in the crowd.

Can I make this vegan/vegetarian/low carb/gluten-free?
Here are some suggestions, but I can’t guarantee results. Be sure as always to check particular brands and ingredients if you’re following a specific diet or have diet restrictions or allergies.

Vegan – You can omit the blue cheese or use a dairy-free cheese substitute.

Vegetarian – It’s vegetarian. Be sure to check individual brands/products just to be sure.

Low-Carb – For a lower-carb version, omit the sugar in the dressing or use a sugar substitute.

Gluten-Free – This should be gluten-free, but check ingredient labels as needed to be sure.
