Making sandwich bread from scratch is easier than it sounds, and this recipe proves it. The dough is forgiving, the steps are simple, and the result is two loaves of classic, dependable bread that beats store-bought every single time. No need to go to a bakery or the grocery store to get bread when you can make it yourself in no time.

What I Love About This Recipe

  • I love how reliable this bread is. The dough rises beautifully, bakes evenly, and produces soft loaves without being fragile. It’s sturdy enough for sandwiches but still tender and fluffy. That balance is exactly what good sandwich bread should be.
  • The flavor is simple and comforting. A touch of butter and milk gives the bread richness without making it heavy. It tastes clean, classic, and familiar in the best way. This is everyday bread done right.
  • This recipe makes two loaves, which is always a win. One loaf for now and one for later, or one to share. Homemade bread like this disappears quickly, so having a backup loaf is never a bad thing.
  • I also love how versatile this bread is. It works for toast, sandwiches, French toast, or just warm with butter. It’s the kind of recipe you bake once and then keep coming back to. That’s what makes it a staple.

White Sandwich Bread Ingredients

For the Bread

  • Warm Milk – Activates the yeast and adds tenderness to the crumb.
  • Granulated Sugar – Feeds the yeast and lightly sweetens the bread.
  • Active Dry Yeast – Helps the bread rise and stay fluffy.
  • Butter – Adds richness and classic flavor.
  • All-Purpose Flour – Creates structure while keeping the bread soft.
  • Salt – Balances flavor and strengthens the dough.
  • Vegetable or Canola Oil – Used for greasing the bowl and helping the dough rise.

For the Topping

  • Melted Butter – Brushed on top for flavor and a soft crust.

How to Make White Sandwich Bread

Step One: Activate the Yeast
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook, stir together the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes, until foamy.

Step Two: Make the Dough
Add the softened butter, 4 cups of flour, and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix on low speed until combined, adding more flour a little at a time until a soft dough forms. Increase the speed to medium and knead for 4 to 6 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Step Three: First Rise and Shape the Loaves
Lightly grease a large bowl with oil. Place the dough in the bowl, turning once to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm, draft-free place until doubled in size, about 1 hour. Punch down the dough, divide it into two equal portions, shape into loaves, and place in greased loaf pans.

Step Four: Preheat the Oven
Brush the tops with melted butter, cover loosely, and let rise again for about 30 minutes.

Step Five: Preheat the Oven
Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Step Six: Bake the Bread
Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the loaves are golden brown and sound hollow when lightly tapped. Cool slightly, then remove from the pans and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
