Garlic lovers, dill lovers, and ranch dressing fans, this one’s for YOU! 6 mason jars of Mexican Homemade Ranch Seasoning mixes

This homemade ranch seasoning mix is one of my favorite ways to add a little extra flavor to everyday recipes. It’s great for chicken, potatoes, vegetables, and even popcorn. But my favorite way to use it? A big bowl of creamy Garlic Dill Ranch Dip with potato chips or crunchy vegetables. SO good!

What makes this homemade seasoning a little different is that it uses both garlic powder AND dried garlic flakes. The garlic powder blends throughout the seasoning for a consistent garlic flavor, while the dried garlic flakes add little bursts of garlic goodness.

Then there’s the dill! A whole tablespoon of dried dill gives this ranch mix its signature herbal flavor. It works beautifully with the garlic and tangy buttermilk powder. Add a little parsley, onion powder, salt, and pepper, and you’ve got a delicious homemade seasoning that can do a whole lot more than make ranch dressing.

If you’ve made my original Homemade Ranch Seasoning, this version has a stronger garlic and dill flavor. It’s especially delicious with potatoes, chicken, fish, and vegetables. And unlike making ranch dressing from scratch with fresh herbs, this dry seasoning can be prepared ahead of time and stored for whenever you need it.

The only ingredient that might take a little searching is dried buttermilk powder. You can often find it in the baking aisle, at specialty grocery stores, or online. Once you have everything, you can whip up this seasoning in about FIVE minutes.

What I Love About This Recipe

  • It’s packed with garlic flavor. This seasoning uses both garlic powder and dried garlic flakes for a delicious double dose of garlic. The powder distributes evenly throughout the mix, while the flakes add little pieces of garlic that soften in creamy dips and dressings. It’s perfect for anyone who thinks a recipe can always use a little more garlic.
  • The dill really shines. A full tablespoon of dried dill gives this homemade ranch seasoning a wonderful herby flavor. It pairs beautifully with garlic and tangy buttermilk without needing a long list of ingredients. If you love dill-flavored dips, sauces, and potatoes, this seasoning is right up your alley.
  • It makes a fantastic creamy dip. Mix this Garlic Dill Ranch Seasoning with sour cream for an easy appetizer that’s perfect for parties, holidays, and game day. The garlic flakes soften as the dip chills, while the dill adds plenty of flavor. Serve it with fresh vegetables, potato chips, crackers, or pretzels.
  • It works with SO many foods. Sprinkle this homemade seasoning over chicken, roasted potatoes, fish, or vegetables. Stir it into creamy pasta sauces or use it to flavor homemade salad dressing. It’s a simple way to make everyday dishes taste a little more exciting.
  • It’s easy to make ahead. All you need is a bowl, a spoon, and a few minutes to combine the ingredients. Store the finished seasoning according to your dried buttermilk powder package directions, and you’ll have a handy mix ready for quick meals. It’s especially convenient when you want homemade ranch flavor without measuring individual spices every time.

What Is Garlic Dill Ranch Seasoning?

Garlic Dill Ranch Seasoning is a homemade dry ranch seasoning mix with extra garlic and dill flavor. Like traditional ranch seasoning, it contains dried buttermilk powder, parsley, onion powder, salt, and pepper. But this version takes the garlic and dill up a notch!

It includes both garlic powder and dried garlic flakes, along with a generous amount of dried dill. The buttermilk powder adds that familiar creamy, tangy ranch flavor, while the garlic and dill give the mix its distinctive savory, herbal taste.

You can use this seasoning dry or combine it with milk, mayonnaise, sour cream, or Greek yogurt to make homemade ranch dressing and dip. It’s especially delicious with chicken, potatoes, fish, and vegetables. And since the ingredients are dried, you can mix up a batch ahead of time and have it ready whenever you need a little extra flavor.

Equipment You May Need

  • Mixing Bowl – A small bowl is all you need to combine the dried buttermilk powder, garlic, dill, and other seasonings.
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons – For measuring the buttermilk powder and smaller amounts of herbs and spices.
  • Spoon or Small Whisk – Helps break up any clumps and distribute the ingredients evenly.
  • Spice Jar – A small glass jar or airtight container works well for storing the finished seasoning.
  • Small Funnel – Optional, but helpful when transferring the seasoning into a narrow jar.
  • Spice Grinder – Optional if you prefer a finer seasoning powder without larger pieces of dried garlic.

Homemade Garlic Dill Ranch Seasoning Ingredients

You only need eight ingredients to make this easy homemade garlic dill ranch mix. And if you love garlic and dill, you’re going to appreciate how much flavor these simple ingredients bring to the party!

  • Dried Buttermilk Powder – The base of this homemade ranch seasoning. It gives the mix its classic tangy, creamy ranch flavor. Look for dried buttermilk powder in the baking aisle, specialty grocery stores, or online. Check the package for storage directions because some brands need refrigeration after opening.
  • Dried Dill – The star of the show! A generous amount of dried dill gives this seasoning its fresh-tasting, slightly grassy, herbal flavor. It’s especially delicious with garlic, potatoes, chicken, and fish.
  • Dried Parsley – Adds a mild herbal flavor and a little green color. Crush larger parsley leaves so they distribute more evenly throughout the seasoning.
  • Garlic Powder – Provides a concentrated garlic flavor that blends smoothly into dips, dressings, and other recipes. It’s one of the ingredients that makes this ranch mix so deliciously garlicky.
  • Dried Garlic Flakes – These little pieces of dried garlic add texture and extra garlic flavor. They soften when mixed into sour cream, mayonnaise, or other moist ingredients. Be sure to use dried garlic flakes rather than fresh minced garlic.
  • Salt – Helps bring out the flavors of the garlic, dill, buttermilk, and other spices. You can adjust the amount to suit your taste.
  • Onion Powder – Adds a little savory onion flavor that complements the garlic without overpowering the dill.
  • Ground Pepper – Gives the seasoning a subtle peppery finish and balances the tangy, herby flavors.

All eight ingredients should be dry. Fresh dill, fresh parsley, or fresh garlic contain moisture and aren’t suitable for storing in this dry ranch seasoning mix.

Quick Tips for Best Results

  • Use both types of garlic. Garlic powder gives the seasoning flavor throughout, while dried garlic flakes add little pieces of garlic and extra texture.
  • Don’t skimp on the dill. The generous amount of dried dill is what gives this recipe its signature flavor.
  • Stick with dried ingredients. Fresh garlic and herbs add moisture and aren’t suitable for storing in this dry seasoning mix.
  • Use dried garlic flakes, not fresh garlic. Fresh garlic will change the moisture content and storage requirements.
  • Crush large parsley pieces. Smaller pieces distribute more evenly throughout the seasoning.
  • Break up buttermilk clumps. Stir thoroughly so the seasoning is evenly mixed.
  • Let dips and dressings chill. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes so the garlic flakes soften and the flavors blend together.
  • Start with less seasoning. You can always add more to dips, dressings, chicken, or potatoes.
  • Use fresh spices. Older dried herbs and spices may have less flavor.
  • Watch the salt. The seasoning already contains salt, so adjust other seasonings in your recipes accordingly.
  • Avoid excessive direct heat. Dried buttermilk powder can brown when exposed to very high temperatures.
  • Keep the seasoning dry. Use an airtight container and a clean, dry spoon.
  • Check the buttermilk package. Follow the manufacturer’s storage directions and expiration date.
  • Make a batch ahead. It’s a handy seasoning for quick chicken dinners, creamy dips, roasted potatoes, and homemade dressing.

Homemade Garlic Dill Ranch Seasoning FAQ

How should I store Homemade Garlic Dill Ranch Seasoning?
Store the seasoning in an airtight container and follow the storage directions on your dried buttermilk powder package. Some brands recommend refrigeration after opening. Keep moisture out of the container and always use a clean, dry spoon.

Can I freeze Homemade Garlic Dill Ranch Seasoning?
You may be able to freeze the dry seasoning in a tightly sealed, moisture-resistant container, depending on the dried buttermilk powder you’re using. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations first and protect the seasoning from condensation.

How long will Homemade Garlic Dill Ranch Seasoning last?
That depends on the dried buttermilk powder and herbs and spices you use. Check the expiration or best-by date on the buttermilk package and follow its storage recommendations. The dried dill and garlic may gradually lose flavor over time.

Substitutions?
You can substitute or adjust your favorite dried herbs and spices. For the signature garlic dill flavor, I recommend keeping both the garlic powder and dried garlic flakes, along with the dried dill. The dried buttermilk powder is also important for the classic tangy ranch flavor.

Can I use low-fat ingredients?
Absolutely! When making ranch dressing, you can use lower-fat milk or lighter mayonnaise. For the dip, try reduced-fat sour cream or Greek yogurt. The flavor and consistency may be a little different, but these are easy substitutions.

How much homemade Ranch seasoning equals one packet of Ranch?
About 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons of homemade ranch seasoning is a useful starting point for replacing one (1 oz.) packet of ranch seasoning. Since homemade mixes can vary in flavor and concentration, start with a little less and add more to taste.

How do you make Ranch Dressing with homemade Ranch Seasoning?
Combine about 2-3 tablespoons of Homemade Garlic Dill Ranch Seasoning with 1 cup of milk and 1 cup of mayonnaise. Mix well, cover, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight for the best flavor. The dried garlic flakes and herbs will soften as the dressing chills.

How do you make Ranch Dip with homemade Ranch Seasoning?
Combine about 1-2 tablespoons of seasoning with 1 cup of sour cream, or use half sour cream and half mayonnaise (or Greek yogurt). Mix well, cover, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight. Serve with fresh vegetables, chips, crackers, or pretzels.

What else can I add to this recipe?
Try adjusting the garlic powder, dried garlic flakes, or dill if you prefer a stronger flavor. You could also add a little extra black pepper or parsley. I recommend trying the recipe as written before making changes.

Can I make this vegan/vegetarian/low carb/gluten-free?
Here are a few suggestions, but always check individual ingredient labels if you have dietary restrictions or allergies.

Vegan – This seasoning isn’t vegan because it contains dried buttermilk powder. You would need a dairy-free alternative, which would change the recipe and flavor.

Vegetarian – This seasoning is generally suitable for vegetarians who consume dairy products.

Low-Carb – The seasoning contains some carbohydrates from the dried buttermilk powder and other ingredients. You can use small amounts in low-carb recipes, but check the nutrition information for your serving size.

Gluten-Free – The ingredients are generally gluten-free, but check the dried buttermilk powder and spice labels for additives or possible cross-contact.
