Snow Ice Cream has been on my “to-do” list for years. I’ve also heard it called snow cream. I really don’t have any good excuses as far as why it’s taken me so long to finally try it. We’ve lived in Connecticut for a year now, and lived in Iowa for 3 years prior, so there have been PLENTY of chances to use up some snow.
Yesterday my kids had a snow day from school thanks to the 18+ inches of snow we received overnight so I figured it was a good of time as any to give the snow ice cream a try!
There are recipes for snow ice cream all over the internet so this is nothing original. However, most of the recipes on the internet are for vanilla ice cream. Although, I like vanilla, I just happened to notice some cocoa powder and peppermint and thought I’d give it a try.

Let’s get started! Mix together the condensed milk, cocoa powder, and peppermint extract until combined. Be sure to have this all ready before you get the snow because the snow will melt fast.
Then get some white fluffy snow. Make sure it looks clean! :)
Combine the chocolate and all the snow. When you start mixing everything together it will look a littly clumpy, but keep mixing.
My daughter couldn’t help but try some right away and couldn’t stop licking her lips! I think that’s a good sign and now we know how to make snow ice cream! Yay!

Chocolate Peppermint Snow Ice Cream
- 8 cups clean fluffy snow (or finely shaved ice)
- 1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
- Place snow in large mixing bowl.
- In separate bowl mix together milk, cocoa, and peppermint until well combined. Pour over snow and mix together until combined.
- Eat immediately or place in container and freeze.
SNAPPY TIPS: The ice cream is fairly soft right after you mix it together. If you want it a harder consistency, spoon it in a container with lid and freeze for an hour or two.
SNAPPY SUBSTITUTIONS: For vanilla ice cream, omit the chocolate and peppermint and substitute 1 teaspoon vanilla. Instead of peppermint extract try any of your favorite extracts or flavorings such as mint, raspberry, etc.
