Find out what’s in a cannoli as well as some of my favorite cannoli inspired recipes!
Oh how I love a good cannoli! If you’ve been following Snappy Gourmet for awhile, you know I love creating cannoli inspired recipes. One of my favorite desserts of all time. Love, love, LOVE them!
I know there are still some people out there, who are like “What’s a cannoli?”. If you’re one of those people, I’m sorry you’ve never had the pleasure of having one. Have one, ok?
What’s in a Cannoli?
A cannoli starts with a tube-shaped pastry shell that is a deep fried pastry dough. The shell is then filled with a creamy filling that generally consists of ricotta cheese and powdered sugar. The cheese and sugar are mixed together until smooth.
Along with the ricotta and sugar filling, a cannoli may include other things such as candied fruit, chocolate chips, nuts, cinnamon, mascarpone cheese, or a wide variety of other things. Some people even fold in whipped cream.
The ends of the cannoli may be plain, or may have mini chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or even a maraschino cherry.
So many variations of the pastry shell and fillings! Some shells are dipped in chocolate and some shells may even be all chocolate. You’ll see a lot of different flavors now!
National Cannoli Day
National Cannoli Day is June 16th in case you were wondering. But please try a cannoli even if it’s not National Cannoli Day. They are readily available at many grocery stores and bakeries these days.
