Cheesy Sloppy Joe Bread Bowls are an easy 30-minute dinner made with seasoned ground beef, a homemade sloppy joe sauce, melty cheese, and soft bread rolls baked into fun, hearty bowls. This comfort food favorite is perfect for busy weeknights, game day meals, or casual family dinners when you want a classic sloppy joe with a creative twist.

Cheesy Sloppy Joe Bread Bowls are one of those recipes that instantly make everyone excited for dinner. They take everything you love about classic sloppy joes and turn them into a fun, handheld bread bowl that is loaded with flavor and just the right amount of cheesy goodness. If sloppy joes are already a favorite in your house, this version is guaranteed to be a hit.

What makes this recipe so great is how quick and flexible it is. The homemade sloppy joe sauce comes together in just minutes using pantry staples, and you can easily adjust the seasoning to fit your family’s taste. Like it sweeter, tangier, or with a little heat? No problem. This recipe is easy to customize without extra effort.
I used pretzel rolls for these bread bowls because they are sturdy, flavorful, and hold up really well to the sloppy joe filling. That said, you can absolutely use any rolls you like, including sandwich rolls, bakery rolls, or even mini rolls if you want to turn these into party appetizers. The melted cheese at the bottom and on top helps keep everything tucked neatly inside, so they are less messy than traditional sloppy joes but just as satisfying.
These Cheesy Sloppy Joe Bread Bowls are perfect for quick weeknight dinners, casual get-togethers, or even game day spreads. They are filling, comforting, and incredibly easy to make, which is always a win.

How to Make Cheesy Sloppy Joe Bread Bowls
Step One: Cook the Beef
Place the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until it is no longer pink. Add the chopped onion and green pepper and continue cooking until the vegetables begin to soften.
Step Two: Make the Sauce
In a small bowl, stir together the ketchup, water, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, mustard powder, and garlic powder until well combined.
Step Three: Simmer
Drain any excess grease from the skillet, then return it to the heat. Pour the sauce over the beef and vegetables, stir to combine, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Step Four: Prep the Rolls
Cut the tops off the rolls and gently remove some of the inside to create a hollow center. Place a small piece of cheese in the bottom of each roll.
Step Five: Assemble and Serve
Spoon the sloppy joe mixture into each roll and top with the remaining cheese. If needed, place the bread bowls in a warm oven or toaster oven for a few minutes to melt the cheese. Serve warm.
