Yes, you can buy teriyaki marinade, but this Homemade Teriyaki Marinade Recipe is so quick and easy, you’ll be wondering why you didn’t make it at home earlier! The best part is you can make easily change it up with a wide range of ingredients. Easy!
If you like teriyaki (like my Teriyaki Pork or Easy Chicken Lettuce Wraps), I think you’ll enjoy this homemade teriyaki marinade.
This teriyaki marinade is one of my favorite things to have on hand. It’s quick and easy to make and perfect for beef, chicken, or even pork.
How to make Homemade Teriyaki Marinade
The main ingredient in teriyaki, is soy sauce. So start with a good quality soy sauce. I like to use the low sodium versions, but you can use the regular version as well.
Next add water, pineapple juice, brown sugar, and worcestershire sauce. Instead of pineapple juice you could add more water or even orange juice. As far as the brown sugar you could use either light or dark.
Add the vegetable oil. You could also use canola oil.
Add the garlic powder, onion powder, and ginger. You could use fresh garlic, but garlic powder works well. As far as the ginger, I like to use the prepared ginger in a tube in the produce section. You could also use fresh ginger or even a little ground dried ginger if you’d like.
That’s it! Whisk it all together and it’s ready to go or you can store in the refrigerator for a few days.
You could add a little green onion or scallions. A little sesame oil and/or rice vinegar would also be great additions.
So many possibilities! I’d suggest starting with the recipe as written then make changes the next time based on what you like.
Once you have your marinade all ready to go, you can use it for a wide range of things. It’s great on beef, pork, or chicken.
I love using this teriyaki marinade for flank steak or skirt steak. Place the meat in a resealable bag, cover with the teriyaki marinade, seal the bag, and let it marinate overnight.
Depending on your cut of meat, you may need to marinate for more or less time. For boneless chicken breasts, I’d marinate for maybe a half hour or so but not overnight.
My kids love when we grill the skirt steak or flank steak after it’s been marinating overnight. So good and tender! It’s a great teiryaki steak marinade!
Would love to hear how you change up this teriyaki sauce for your family!

Great marinade recipe! I always make my own marinades, dressings, vinaigrette, and spice mixes. I hate having to buy something which I can just as easily make at home…but minus the preservatives. This will be making an appearance at one of my BBQ cookouts this year!
