A few suggestions of some items you may need…
Equipment You May Need
- Heart-Shaped Biscuit Cutter – Inexpensive heart-shaped biscuit cutters will make cutting out the dough so much easier. Or you could buy a regular biscuit cutter as well.
- Strawberry Huller – A fun little kitchen gadget, a strawberry huller can make prepping the strawberries quick and easy for the Strawberry Butter.
- Silicone Mat– A silicone mat makes rolling out the dough so easy and helps prevent the dough from sticking. Also great for baking the biscuits on.
- Pastry Cutter – A pastry cutter is a great tool to help make the biscuit dough.
Just suggestions. You could certainly make these biscuits without all of the equipment listed.

Chocolate Chocolate Chip Biscuits Ingredients:
- All-Purpose Flour – I used all-purpose. I have not tried self-rising flour in this recipe but you could test it. If you go that route, you may need to adjust the baking soda and/or salt.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder – Be sure to use a good quality unsweetened cocoa powder, not sweetened. You could also use unsweetened dark cocoa powder.
- Granulated Sugar – Regular ol’ granulated sugar.
- Baking Soda – To help the biscuits rise and be light and fluffy.
- Salt – Just a little.
- Shortening – You could also try unsalted butter.
- Buttermilk – I used store-bought buttermilk but you could also make homemade sour milk.
- Miniature Chocolate Chips – Or you could use chopped chocolate such as bittersweet, semi-sweet, or dark chocolate. Regular chocolate chips would also work too.
How to Make Chocolate Chocolate Chip Biscuits:
Step One: Preheat oven to 425 degrees F and line a baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper.
Step Two: Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl including the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Step Three: Using a pastry cutter, fork, or two knives, cut in the cold shortening to the dry ingredients until the shortening is small bits. Mix in buttermilk. Fold in chocolate chips.
Step Four: Gently roll dough out onto lightly floured work surface or silicone mat until dough is about 1 inch thick. Using a heart-shaped cutter (about 2 1/2 inch wide), cut dough (or use any size/shape cutter), then reroll dough, cut again, and repeat until all dough used.
Step Five: Place biscuits on prepared pan. Lightly brush tops with a little buttermilk and sprinkle a little granulated sugar on top. Bake at 425 degrees F for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown around edges.
Strawberry Butter Ingredients
- Unsalted Butter – Make sure your butter is soft so you can mix in the other ingredients. You could use salted butter if you’d like and adjust the salt amount.
- Granulated Sugar – You could use powdered sugar or your favorite sweetener. You may need to adjust the amount.
- Vanilla – Or you could use your favorite flavoring or extract. A little orange juice and/or zest would also be great.
- Salt – Just a little. You can adjust the amount to your personal preference.
- Fresh Strawberries – I think fresh strawberries work best but you could use defrosted drained frozen unsweetened strawberries.
How to Make Strawberry Butter
Step One: In a small bowl, mix together butter, sugar, and vanilla until well combined. Mix in strawberries and with the back of a fork or spoon, mash the strawberries a little in the butter. Serve with warm biscuits.
Serving Suggestions
- Serve the biscuits warm or at room temperature with the homemade Strawberry Butter or your condiment of choice.
- These chocolate biscuits are great for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, or a special breakfast, brunch, afternoon tea, or even dessert
- For a delicious breakfast or brunch, serve with a fruit salad, eggs, bacon or sausage, or your other favorite breakfast recipes.
- If you have leftover biscuits, you can cube them and bake them to make “chocolate croutons” to put over ice cream. Make ice cream sundaes with the leftover biscuits. Reheat the biscuits for breakfast, tea, or snacks. Or you could even try to make bread pudding with the leftover biscuits!
Quick Tips for Best Results
- Be careful with the biscuit dough and just gently roll it out. Do not overwork it.
- Use a good quality cocoa powder and chocolate chips or chocolate for the BEST tasting biscuits.
- I think the biscuits are best the same day they are made and warm right out of the oven. Personal preference though.
- The Strawberry Butter can be made ahead of time and stored covered in the refrigerated. Bring it to room temperature so it’s soft and spreadable.
- If you’d rather not have the Strawberry Butter so “chunky” you can put all the ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth. Or instead of fresh berries, you could mix a little strawberry jam with the softened butter.
Chocolate Biscuits & Strawberry Butter FAQ
How should I store the Chocolate Biscuits and Strawberry Butter?
I would store any extra biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature or you could store in the refrigerator or freezer for longer storage. The butter should be stored covered in the refrigerator or in the freezer for longer storage.
Can I freeze the Chocolate Biscuits and Strawberry Butter?
Yes, you can freeze both the chocolate biscuits and butter.
How long will the biscuits and butter last?
The biscuits should last a few days at room temperature or a little longer in the refrigerator. They should last a few months in the freezer if well wrapped. The butter should last at least a few days in the refrigerator as well or a few months in the freezer.
Substitutions?
Instead of strawberries, you could use your favorite berry in the butter such as raspberries. Instead of mini chocolate chips, you could use regular chocolate chips or chopped chocolate.
Can I use low-fat ingredients?
I would not recommend using low-fat ingredients for these biscuits. For the Strawberry Butter, you could try using your favorite low-fat margarine or butter alternative.
What else can I add to this recipe?
You could add different kinds of chocolate chips or chopped chocolate to your biscuits or even chopped nuts. You can add your favorite flavorings or extracts to the butter. A little orange zest or juice would be great in the butter.
Can I make this vegan/vegetarian/low carb/gluten-free?
Here are some suggestions, but I can’t guarantee results. Be sure as always to check particular brands and ingredients if you’re following a specific diet or have diet restrictions or allergies.
Vegan – This biscuit recipe would be tough to make vegan. I would suggest following a vegan biscuit recipe instead.
Vegetarian – It’s vegetarian. Be sure to check individual brands/products just to be sure though.
Low-Carb – You can try a sugar substitute for the sugar but this is not a low-carb recipe.
Gluten-Free – You can try a gluten-free baking flour that has a 1:1 substitute ratio.
How to Keep Biscuits Warm:
Like I said above, I served these homemade biscuits warm with the strawberry butter. So I suggest baking the biscuits right before serving for best results. That’s when they’re still warm and fresh.
If you’re looking for some tips though on how to keep biscuits warm as long as you can or how to make them warm again, I have a few suggestions.
Tip One: To keep the biscuits warm for a while, you can turn the oven off and keep the biscuits in the oven. Just be careful you don’t keep the biscuits in the oven too long, or they will overbake and start drying out. You can leave the oven door open a bit so the oven isn’t too hot.
Tip Two: I like to wrap biscuits and bread in a clean kitchen towel or cloth and place in a basket until ready to serve. This is my personal preference for keeping biscuits warm for short periods of time. Instead of a kitchen towel or cloth, you could also wrap the biscuits in aluminum foil to help keep the heat inside.
Tip Three: You can also warm the kitchen towel or cloth (dryer, iron, or whatever…) before placing the biscuits inside. I have also heard of people placing rice in a cloth drawstring bag, microwaving the bag with rice, then removing the rice and keeping the biscuits inside.
Tip Four: You could also reheat the biscuits completely by warming them up in the oven (like a200 degrees F) for a few minutes.
