Homemade Ranch Seasoning Recipe with 6 flavors: Original, Garlic-Dill, Italian, Mexican, Bold Onion, and Lemon-Poppy. Make your own Ranch mixes in no time!
Homemade Ranch Seasoning recipe for you today! How about 6 recipes all in one so you can make 6 flavors (Original, Bold Onion, Lemon Poppy, Garlic-Dill, Italian, and Mexican) of ranch all at the same time? Make your favorite Ranch mix at-home in just minutes!
The only thing not so “snappy” about these homemade ranch seasoning recipes is the time it takes at the store to find all the spices and ingredients. If you can’t find some, check out Penzey’s for a great assortment of herbs, spices, and more.
You’ll also need some dried buttermilk. Many grocery stores carry it or AMAZON also has some options. Once you have all your ingredients, it literally only takes a few minutes to combine for your own Ranch mixes.
I started off by making a recipe for an “original” version of Ranch, then quickly started adding other things I had around the house for different flavors. Next thing I knew I had 5 more Ranch flavors: Bold Onion, Lemon Poppy, Garlic-Dill, Italian, and Mexican.
You can use these Homemade Ranch Seasoning mixes just as you would the store-bought version. You can make dips, salad dressings, or use in breading for fish/chicken, etc. The ideas are endless! About 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons of homemade Ranch seasoning equals one (1 oz.) packet of Ranch seasoning.
However, I’d suggest starting with about 2 tablespoons to your recipes then add more to taste. You might also have to adjust the quantities of the herbs and spices for your family’s personal taste. Results may also vary a bit depending on how old your herbs and spices are so adjust accordingly.
One last thing, be sure to check the expiration date on your dried buttermilk so you know how long you can store your homemade Ranch seasoning. What flavor of Ranch mix would you create? Tell me about it below! Enjoy!

What about making it into a dip? A fave treat of mine is dipping BBQ potato chips into ranch dip.
Lisa Huff says
Yes, you can definitely add to a dip. I’d mix some of the seasoning with a combo of mayo and sour cream.
Cheryl Calway says
Exactly how much liquid do you add to these mixes.
Lisa Huff says
Depends on what you want to make. To make salad dressing, mix about 2-3 tablespoons of one of the mixes with 1 cup of milk and 1 cup of mayonnaise. Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes or overnight for best results.

I’ve been looking for a homemade ranch seasoning mix – I’m not supposed to have too much salt in my diet, due to blood pressure. Have heard the packaged store bought mixes are very salty – is this recipe considered to be on the salty side? Just wondered if I can reduce the 1 tspn. of salt this calls for? Thank you!
Lisa Huff says
I would suggest omitting the salt completely, see how you like it, then you could always add some in after.
Barbara says
Glad you mentioned Penzey’s. Their spices are outstanding and great customer service.
Pamela Shank says
What an awesome idea! I love to do things like this. Pinned your recipe and will be doing this.
Nana B says
Where do you find “DRIED” buttermilk? (We live in small town with one grocery store)…what big stores have it? Thanks.
Lisa Huff says
Nana, most large grocery stores will carry it (sometimes in the baking aisle or near the evaporated/condensed milk). Or you can also order online through Amazon or King Arthur Flour.
Blessed Little Family says
Is there anything I can substitute for the dried buttermilk or can I leave it out? My daughter has a dairy allergy. Thanks!
Lisa Huff says
HI! Sorry to hear about your daughter’s allergy. You could definitely try a dry milk substitute, but I’m afraid I’m not too familiar with them. You could omit it, but you’ll be left with more of an herb mix. The herb mix will still be good though you just couldn’t substitute it in the same amounts as a Ranch packet mix.
Kaye Durham says
Do you have to refrigerate the mixes. My dried buttermilk says to refrigerate after opening.
Lisa Huff says
If your dried buttermilk says to refrigerate after opening I would refrigerate. The brands of buttermilk I used did not say to refrigerate, so I did not refrigerate mine.

Can’t wait to try some of these!

Thanks Deb! Happy New Year!

This is such an awesome idea! I need to make the ranch as that is my daughters favorite.

I will definitely be using these when the fall/winter comes. I love using Ranch seasonings! Thanks so much for sharing these!
Lisa Huff says
Funny you should mention using the ranch seasoning in the winter, I was actually going to save this recipe until winter but my buttermilk was expiring soon! LOL :)
Elizabeth Streich says
Neat idea! Do you stir some of the mix into sour cream or how do you turn it into dressing? I’ve never used a packet for ranch (my only experience is with Good Seasoning’s Italian packets)…
Lisa Huff says
Typically for salad dressing you mix a 1oz packet (~2-3 tablespoons) with 1 cup milk and 1 cup mayo. Cover and refrigerate for at 30 minutes+.
